Summer Days

Around here, summer means:

  • bug spray
  • getting mosquito bites anyway
  • sunscreen
  • freckles
  • sand
  • Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream
  • grass clippings
  • wading pools
  • lightning bugs
  • sweaty heads
  • daily baths
  • lots of tomatoes
  • popsicles
  • hide-and-seek
  • oversized T-shirts as PJs
  • bare feet
  • dirty feet
  • going to bed late
  • sleeping late(ish)
What does summer mean to you and your family?

A Job Well Done

In March of 2006 I became a homemaker, and in September of 2006 I became a stay-at-home mom. In all of that time, I have never - not once - felt like I was doing a good job. Sure, I enjoy what I do. Sure, I occasionally get one or two areas of life on track.

But I have never felt like I was living up to my "contract." There are many excuses I could make - depression, sleep-deprivation, health problems - but those things are just parts of life that I need to cope with right now. I need to push past the problems and get things done.

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving." Colossians 2:23-24

Here are some specific areas I'll be working on this year:

1. Personal study and prayer time
2. Be a more supportive & loving wife
3. Interact more with my children
4. Less computer time
5. Daily exercise
6. Start healthy eating habits
7. Keep a cleaner house

I see 2010 as full of possibility and hope. I want to focus on my job this year, and start living for someone other than myself. I hope that you will be able to see evidence of growth and change in my blog throughout the year.

Please pray for me, that I will have His strength and peace as I try to get things right. And please stop by and encourage me whenever you can - I could use the support!

Happy New Year!

1998

About twelve years ago, I was starting as a college freshman at Harding University. One of the first people I met there was a nice guy named James. My best friend instantly took a liking to him, so my roommates and I contrived ways to throw them together.

Little did we know that in throwing the two of them together, we were also throwing the two of us together - and a few months later he shocked me by asking me out. Instead of her. Really. Aren't I a good friend? (A story for another time - but I will say we're still best friends, and she's happily married and expecting her 2nd child!)

We dated seriously all that spring semester, and when summer began, I (tearfully) went home to Virginia, and he went home to Florida. Other than one week during the summer, we were apart for three months.

In the fall we were reunited again for about a week before I (tearfully) flew to London for the semester. I didn't want to go. I wanted to stay on campus with my safe little life, and be near James. He made me go - he lovingly encouraged me to leave him for three months...and it was the most important semester in my college years. (Another story for another time.)

There were many (tearful) trans-Atlantic phone conversations that semester. After a semester in London and a whirlwind tour western Europe, I flew back to campus, and James proposed the next morning, December 17th, 1997. (Yet another story for another time!)

Ten years ago today, we tied the knot. Our wedding was simple, and beautiful, and short. We were surrounded by our families & best friends, and even though police were called and we had a fire (no joke), it was a wonderful day. That's what the pictures tell me, anyway - it's all kind of a blur in my memory.

Since that day, I have grown to love James more and more with each passing year, with each crisis or new stage in our lives, and definitely as we have become parents. He has been by my side and pulled me through depression, anxiety attacks, vet school, poor health, deep discouragement, a very difficult pregnancy, and new parenthood.

He has been my partner in giggle fits, my competition in Mario Kart, my spider squasher, my high-things-reacher, my sounding board, and my resident engineer.

He challenges my thinking when I am too easy on myself. He challenges my priorities and focus. He is an honorable man after God's heart, and he thrives on helping people and showing love. He's a dedicated Daddy, and he holds Wendy's heart in his hands.

Our life may not look quite how we imagined ten years ago today, but I wouldn't trade any step of our journey - because every step has been with you.

I love you, my Squeak. Happy Anniversary!

I Really, Really Love Target

I went to Target on Saturday to get a sleeping bag for Wendy for our upcoming trip to Florida. She's officially outgrown the Pack N Play (even though hers is oversized), and this will be our first time traveling without it. We're going to work on training her that her sleeping bag is the same as her bed at home - meaning Thou Shalt Not Leave The Confines Of The Sleeping Bag Unless Given Express Permission.

We'll see how that goes. Wish us luck.

My mother was at Target with us, and she wanted to look in the toy section, thinking ahead to Wendy's birthday. Then we saw this:

I couldn't believe it. I grabbed it off the shelf immediately, turned it over, and turned the knob to hear if it made the music I remember so vividly from childhood, and...it does.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who played with one of these clocks as a child. I loved mine, and it still resides in my grandparents' basement somewhere.

I don't even need to tell you that it jumped into the cart and came home with us. I can't wait for Wendy's birthday - I'm just sure she's going to love it!

(And if you want one of your own, look in the toy aisle with puppets at Target - they had this clock, the radio thingie with the screen, and the old-style Chatter telephone!)

Happiness Is...

I decided to put together a few pictures of things that really make me happy. You might enjoy some of the same things, or you might think I'm a weirdo. Time will tell.

It has been a bright, sunshiny day today. I did as I always do on days like this and washed everything I could find to hang outside on the line. You might be able to see Wendy's bunny slippers hanging out among the cloth diapers and blankets:

I love looking at the clothes on the line, snapping in the breeze, and smelling the warm Tide scent the clothes give off as they dry. I think this is especially cute hanging out on the line:

Look! A cloud! It was the only one in sight.

My pretty flowers also make me happy. I didn't blog much last week because I was outside waking up the flowerbed. This is one of the impatiens that are in my hanging baskets on the front porch:

My climbing roses - Don Juans, with a wonderful scent - are about to burst into bloom! The little lightning bolts highlight the buds:

And of course this makes me happy! My pretty Wendy, all ready for a nap, and showing off her new pretty cloth diaper!

I realized I hadn't shown kitten pictures lately - they're 3 weeks old today. I'll try to get some good pictures up soon.
